World Health Day, One Billion Rising Kenya at Ober Primary School Siaya

Ober Primary School in Siaya County, Kenya,  hosted one of One Billion Rising Kenya’s flagship events – World Health Day 2024, . The event centred around promoting oral health among the students, with a guest speaker from Siaya County Hospital delivering an informative talk on the importance of oral hygiene. The Community Oral Health Officers (COHO) provided valuable insights into various aspects of oral health, ranging from the types of teeth and their functions to proper brushing techniques. Following the talk, each pupil was given a toothbrush and toothpaste to encourage them to implement the lessons learned. Additionally, girls in the upper classes were provided with menstrual pads, highlighting the organization’s commitment to addressing various health needs among young girls. The One Billion Rising team, led by Model Winnie Wenger, collaborated with models from the organization East Africa Plus size Fashion Affair and Makeup artiste Apiyo to make the event a success. These role models added a touch of glamour and inspiration to the occasion, motivating the students to prioritize their health and well-being. International Women’s Day 2024 in Kisumu

This was a transformative event organized by One Billion Rising and HER VOICE Kenya to celebrate International Women’s Day, 44 women entrepreneurs from Kisumu’s slums gathered to share their stories and aspirations.Despite facing daunting challenges, these women showcased remarkable resilience and determination, reflecting the spirit of entrepreneurship thriving in Kisumu.The event, which aimed to empower these women to overcome obstacles and achieve their entrepreneurial dreams, featured personal stories that highlighted the women’s backgrounds, dreams, and the challenges they face.One of the event’s highlights was the selection of five women who demonstrated exceptional potential and determination. V Day 2023 -RISING FOR FREEDOM!

With the world’s population at 7 billion, ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS using art in all its forms to highlight and add their voices in solidarity against gender-based violence issues, they were RISING to show their determination to create a new kind of consciousness. Through young girls, theatre groups, and discussions, they were highlighting the abundance of freedom in our society and the many kinds of freedom that had become bondage. They were advocating for freedom to dress within their choices, freedom to do business and to practice their beliefs, freedom to embrace their bodies and sexuality, freedom to be the responsible expression, freedom to vote, freedom to lead, freedom to healthcare, freedom to clean water, and freedom from pollution.

“ADOPT A FAMILY” Initiative

During the pandemic, Her Voice conducted a campaign called “ADOPT A FAMILY” to support the vulnerable in our community. Due to restrictions on public gatherings, the campaign focused on distributing food items, and toiletries, and assisting people in accessing medical help. The initiative aimed to ensure that families could get through the pandemic safely, highlighting the importance of community support during challenging times.

Earth Day 2021 in Kibera

Youth from Whispers Champion Youth Initiative CBO, in collaboration with Her Voice under the ONE Billion Rising-Kenya, took part in a neighborhood cleanup along Karanja Road in Kibra, Kenya, to commemorate Earth Day 2021. This initiative was part of the larger Rising Gardens theme, which focuses on environmental conservation, particularly in areas that have been neglected or exploited. Whispers Champion Youth Initiative CBO has been instrumental in transforming a once-bushy dumpsite, previously a haven for criminals, into a thriving garden. Here, they grow vegetables, practice Agroforestry, manage a nursery, and provide training on various farming techniques to the local community. This transformation has not only improved the environment but has also uplifted the hopes of youth in the community, steering them away from social vices and towards a more sustainable future. That sounds like a fantastic initiative! Whispers Champion Youth Initiative CBO is doing incredible work in Kibra, not only by cleaning up the environment but also by empowering youth and improving the community’s livelihoods.
